Adding an image to a forum message

How to add an image to your folder and then post that image to the forum as part of a message.

Overview

Inserting an image into a forum mesage is a  two step process:

(1) you need to upload an image from the hard drive on your computer  to your personal  folder on lastsuperpower. (Every member of LS has their own folder on the site. See the rest of our user guide for more info. on this)

(2) you need to go to the forum and use the "insert image" icon (  Insert Image ) to make a copy of the image from your folder and add it to your message.

It is best to have the forum and your own folder simultaneously open in two separate  browser windows. This is  because you may need to go back and forth between them if you mke a mistake along the way.   It may help to either print out these instructions or have them open in a third  browser window.

I  recommend using Internet Explorer as your browser for this  - rather than FireFox (explanation for this recommendation here).   If you don't know what I'm talking about here then you are almost certainly using Internet Explorer anyway -  so don't worry about it!

OK here's a step by step set of instructions for posting an image to the forum.  I've put in a lot of detail but once you've followed the steps you will see that it is much less complicated than it looks.

1. How to upload an image to your folder

1.  Go to your folder by clicking on "my folder" on the blue bar that runs along the top of the page:

2. Click on "add new item" and you will see a drop-down menu.  Now click on "image":

3. In a few seconds you will  see a blank  image edit form:

You will need to enter some information on this form as follows:

(a) the 'short name' field with a single word (lowercase, no special characters, no spaces) . If you must use two words then hyphenate them so there are no spaces eg 'marx-engels'.

(b) The 'title". Ths is just a normal title - it can have spaces, capital letters etc.

(c) The 'description' - you can leave this blank if you want.

Next you should click on "browse". This will take you to the hard drive of your own computer (j a special window).  You will then have to navigate  to where the image you want to upload is located.

Once you've got there, you should  double click on the image. The  address of th image (on your computer) will  now magically  appear in the "browse box" on the image edit form.

Finally,   click on "save" . The  edit menu will disappear and in a few seconds the image itself will appear on your screen. It is now been uploaded from your own computer to  lastsuperpower!

Here is an example of a completed image edit form:

And here is how the  image (above ) appeared after clicking on  "save":

Once you've done all of the above you've successfully uploaded an image from your hard drive to lastsuperpower. The next thing to do is to place a copy of the image into a forum post.

In order to do this you will need the url of your image.  The best way to get this is to  right click on the saved image.  This will bring up a box with a list of options in it.  It will look like this:

(Some  people may wonder why I've suggested accessing the url in this manner rather than by just going to the url in the address bar at the top of the page. The answer is that the url which appears just after something  has been saved has some other stuff tacked onto the end)

You should then left click on "properties" (the very last item in the box). This will bring up another box which shows the the url of the image.   You should select (ie highlight it with your mouse)  the url and copy it (ctrl C ).   The screen-shot below shows how it is done:

2. Inserting the image into a forum message

Once you've copied the url you are ready to insert  the image into a forum message . (Hint: It might be sensible at this stage to paste  the url somewhere in the meantime, rather than rely on it remaining on your  clipboard until you are ready to make use of it. If you open the forum in a new browser window,  its fairly easy to go back and get the url again though)

Here are the steps to follow :

1.  Go to the forum (preferably in a separate browser window)

2. Open a forum edit form  and start typing your message.

3. When you reach the point at which you want to insert your image , click to make the cursor appear  on the spot where  you would like it to appear and follow this by clicking on the "insert image" icon  Insert Image ( one of the green icons at the top of the edit form)

4.  A box will appear with a space for entering the url of your image.  Paste the url into it and then click "ok".

5.  The image will appear in your message.

here's an example:

Your image will immediately appear on the edit form (once you've entered the url and  clicked "OK")

Well that's all. Please don't hesitate to ask questions, give feedback etc on the help forum.
