These men had been arrested by Saddam's secret police in the late 1990s. The dictator was looking for scapegoats to blame for the country's deteriorating economy.

The seven, merchants in Baghdad, were charged with currency manipulation. Their right hands were amputated in a gruesome, videotaped session at the Abu Ghraib prison.

One year after seven Iraqi businessmen left Houston's Texas Medical Center with state-of-the-art prosthetics to replace right hands lopped off by order of Saddam Hussein, most of the men have adjusted remarkably well.

Don North, a Virginia filmmaker helped get the men to Houston and chronicled their experiences in a documentary called A Show of Hands

This definitely puts things in perspective.

I now cannot remember the name of the Australian who was saying that this fear of reprisal from Saddam is at the heart of the WMD fiasco.  He said that when weapons inspections were taking place that one of the female scientists who spoke to the international weapons inspectors lied.  The story he told was that the inspectors knew this was a lie and surmised that she was lying to cover up for the weapons program.  Wrong, big mistake.

After the fact  the real story emerged that she was lying to cover up a dangerous accident/mistake that had been made either by herself, or her team, in order to protect herself from the wrath of Saddam.

The good thing about this story is that they have been marvellously assisted by technology and will now be able to talk, smoke and drink coffee all at the same time!  They might also be thanking their lucky stars that their discussions will no longer have to turn to how to liberate themselves from their brutal dictator Saddam Hussein.
