 • Make your mobile phone beep when new posts and comments appear on Last Superpower

This is more of a toy than a tool at the moment, but I have set up a Twitter account for Last Superpower.

This means that if you are signed up to Twitter, you can make lastsuperpower a friend, and then you'll get SMS's sent to your phone when a new post or comment appears on Last Superpower.

The SMS's will have links to the post or comment, so if you have the Internet on your phone you should be able to read them there. (I haven't checked how or if this works though).

To get your mobile phone ready for Twitter, you'll need to send one SMS to a US number. Check your plan to see how much that will cost. I am on Virgin Mobile's prepaid BeanCounter deal and it only cost me 25c (Australian).

Twitter can also be used for other things. It's main reason when it started was so that you could SMS updates about what you are doing, and your friends then get those updates on their phones.

It's probably not so good for everyday use (who really wants to know that I am now going down the shops for milk and butter?), but if a group of people were heading off for a big event - going out for the night, a music festival, a big rally) it would be good for keeping in touch. Especially if you were organising the rally.

It only takes one SMS from you and everyone who is following you (your friends) will see what you said, instead of having to send out batch SMS's.

For instance, I could send a message "Just caught Noam Chomsky - come and point and laugh at his idealistic notion of history"...and then everyone who was following my updates could...well, you get the idea.

There is a Twitter wiki where people are keeping track of what can and should be done with Twitter.
