Subject: URGENT SITUATION IN WEST PAPUA

source

Dear Friends,

I just received a phone call from a contact in West Papua.

BRIMOB troops have fired on students from Cendrawasih University and the "I.S. Kinje" Theological Seminary. The students were involved in demonstration that was prelude to a planned demonstratioin later in the month on a referendum for West Papua.

One student was shot dead and two are badly wounded. Three BRIMOB troops were killed by the students and the bodies of two of the troops remain on the street in the student area.

Armed forces are now moving in.

I could hear people yelling and fleeing as my contact spoke to me on the phone from the grounds of the theological seminary.

My contact indicated that "this could be our Santa Cruz". His comment is consistent with some of the expressions of fear I heard last week when I was in West Papua.

The Uniting Church in Australia shares in an important relationship with the Evangelical Christian Church in the Land of Papua. The "I.S.Kinje" Theoloical Seminary is a seminary of our partner church.
