IRAQI ELECTIONS TO BE HELD TIMELY

November 30, 2004

The upcoming January elections in Iraq will mark an important step on the way to build stable and democratic Iraq. The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan has strongly supported and will continue to support the Iraqi elections to be held according to the schedule on January 30, 2005.

The meeting on November 26th gathered major Iraqi political parties’ representatives who endorsed the petition requesting the postponement of the national elections due to the security instability in the country. The PUK representation attended the meeting but did not sign the petition.

The PUK believes that timely conduct of the nationwide elections across Iraq is inevitable and crucial to foster successful democratic transition in Iraq. The PUK is ready to take part in the elections at the scheduled time.
